Top 5 Fave Aussie Drummers

1. Phil Rudd (AC/DC)
2. Paul Hester (Crowded House)
3. Jon Coghill (Powderfinger)
4. Rob Hirst (Midnight Oil)
5. Lucius Borich (COG)

No. 1 - Phil Rudd

Pristine, elemental and pure. On classic Acca Dacca tracks such as "Highway To Hell and "Back In Black" Rudd delivered exactly what the music ordered, a subsonic groove of ballsy bass and snare drum sucker punch, the perfect compliment to the rippin' blues riffage of guitarists Malcolm and Angus Young. This drumming freight train doesn't take a two and four groove lightly. Phil understands the power and subtlety behind an astutely placed snare drum rim shot, and the importance of pacing, timing, air and flow - Rudd KNOWS how to lay it down!

Thats so sad and an indictment on people seeing talent just because the band has some cool songs. Phil Rudd is very basic, essentially just keeping time. He's an old school rock drummer with nothing but a hard beat. Rob hurst would be the only drummer on that list with some technical nouse. What about Michael Barker (ex JBT)? An absolute genius drummer in his own right. Grant Collins is also just breathtaking in what he can do but he's not in a band so he doesn't hit the list. Also Virgil Donati - although he's actually so talented that he gets a bit too clinical and becomes boring. Come on - are we talking drummers or bands here???

Hear, hear ... and what about Paul Wheeler?

Biggsy Says:

1/ Jon Farriss
2/ Rob Hirst
3/ Steve Prestwich
4/ Mark Kingsmill
5/ Paul Hester

Jon Farriss at number one because he was an accoustic / electronic pioneer. YES they are old School to a certain degree but they are the reason I play drums today and inspire me and my playing. Its not all about triple rattamadoodles in 15 over 48th time its about feel and taste too. Grant Collins is a freak and a hell of a nice guy and i could have put him in there too along with Barton Price and Frank Celenza. Along with countless guys back in the 80s and 90s belting away in the pubs and clubs i went to. Keep rockin and keep it real, we are all different and like different styles.

Just for your info Al (last message) - Chad Smith is American - but a hell of a drummer.

As for the others - again all fairly basic drummers.
Dont get me wrong Biggsy - I love the music but Jon Farris, Steve Prestwich and Mark Kingsmill are essentially boring. They dont do anything a 16 year old in his first band can't do. Paul Hester was a lot better than his recordings show(and was a great guy too - RIP) - although nothing he did was much more than 'run of the mill'. Rob Hirst is the only one on these 'band' lists that was extraordinary.
Another phenomenal drummer is Terepai Richmond although you wont hear much about him here because he wasn't in 'mainstream bands' Listen to D.I.G. or SWOOP if you want to hear some magical drumming.
Its just sad that phil rudd takes the top rung because there's a gazillion acca dacca fans out there.

whoops - so is moffett... my bad...

Anonymous Says:

Agree that Terepai is awesome but he's the drummer in The Whitlams! Isn't that "mainstream"??

Might be an idea you listen to Lucius Borich - FAR from being a basic drummer!!!!!

I wouldn't call the whitlams anything! lol. I wouldnt really call them mainstream, boring maybe but not mainstream....but I was talking more about his history.
Not many look into funk and jazz drummers when they do these lists. Go to a jazz festival and check out the talent - its amazing.

Ben Gillies
Chris O'Brien
John Watson

IMO - Drummers are Drummers, regardless of whether they're a solo act or in a band albeit a popular one. More power to drummers!

Greg - I agree mate. My comments were aimed squarely at the 70's/80's pop/rock suspects.

Terepai couldn't get anymore mainstream. Sure, he started out fusion with DIG, then shifted in with the Whitlems, but now he plays for Delta Goodrem, Guy Sebastian, etc etc A very in demand live session drummer.
