Nimmervoll's Notes New Year Edition

Posted by Allans Billy Hyde , Friday, December 31, 2010 1:03 PM

Ed Nimmervoll is a legendary Australian rock music journalist, author and historian. He worked on rock magazines Go-Set (1966-1974) and Juke (1975-1992) both as a journalist and as an editor. Since 2000, Nimmervoll has been editor of HowlSpace, a website detailing Australian rock music history, providing artist profiles, news and video interviews.

DID YOU KNOW?
Bruce Springsteen bought his first guitar at the age 13 for a paltry $18. When Springsteen was 16 years old, his mother took out a loan to buy him a $60 Kent guitar, and this was memorialized in Springsteen’s song ‘The Wish’.

MILESTONE
70 years ago Nat King Cole recorded for the first time. The song in question, ‘Sweet Lorraine’, is part of Nat King Cole mythology. It’s popularly held that Cole was essentially a piano player until a drunk at a bar badgered him into singing ‘Sweet Lorraine’, causing Nathaniel Cole to discover his singing voice. What actually happened was that he was already singing the occasional song between the instrumentals when he encountered the drunk audience member. Cole didn’t know the song he was being asked to sing, so he sang ‘Sweet Lorraine’ instead. His singing DID make an impression and now he was singing that song in the recording studio.

WHAT’S NEW
Eventually - probably in the new year – we’re going to hear a new U2 album . It already has a name ‘Songs Of Ascent’. We know this because on the way to a new album U2 register a website address with the same name and months ago they did this with ‘Songs Of Ascent’. The songs for the album were recorded at the same time as last year’s ‘No Line On The Horizon’. But since then the band has back in the studio AND they’ve recorded songs for Bono and Edge’s ‘Spiderman’ musical for Broadway. There’s a lot of music to choose from then, and in 2011 we’ll begin to hear it.

WHAT CAME FIRST
Hardly the name you’d be expecting to break new ground for music in 1987, but almost 40 years into his recording career Tony Bennett’s ‘The Art Of Excellence’ became the first album to be initially released on CD instead of the traditional vinyl format.

WHAT’S THAT SPELL?
Legendary jazz clarinetist Woody Herman’s parents were Otto and Myrtle HERRMAN. It was Woody who changed the spelling of the familial name to Herman.

QUOTE UNQUOTE
Singer songwriter Billy Joel said: “I can't think of one person I've ever met who didn't like some type of music”

I FOUGHT THE LAW
In 1997 Danbert Nobacon from British anarchist rockers Chumbawamba was arrested by Italian police for wearing a skirt and was detained in police cells overnight.

THE NAME GAME
“White Wedding” punk rocker Billy Idol was born William Michael Albert Broad. The name Billy Idol was inspired by a school teacher’s description of Broad as “idle”. Billy decided on the other form of the word.

BEFORE YOU BUY ONLINE, CONSIDER THIS...

Posted by Allans Billy Hyde , Tuesday, December 21, 2010 12:05 PM

At Allans Music + Billy Hyde we strive to give our customers the best value for money.

We realise that with the Aussie Dollar at an all time high against the US dollar more people are deciding to buy off-shore, particularly from the USA. Some products are cheap enough in comparison to Australian prices to see customers willing to:

  • Have NO warranty or service back up
  • Possibly pay duty, freight, customs clearance fees and GST on certain goods
  • Risk power supply issues
  • Make our music industry less viable
The deals do seem that attractive and we can see that even considering the above, it is too attractive to ignore.

Our industry is working to create a more level playing field for our customers - we are working with our local suppliers to achieve a closer parity situation at every opportunity - in this climate it is in our interests to be able to more closely compete.

Australian music retailers invest heavily in our own industry to display and stock the world’s best brands. We also support our local musicians - NOT ONLY DO WE PRIMARILY EMPLOY MUSICIANS
  • We sponsor local battles of the bands, gigs and festivals
  • We support community music organisations in Australia
  • We support music programs for less fortunate youth
  • We present instore workshops and learning opportunities for our customers
  • We provide after sales service and product back up
And so do many Australian music retailers.

So give us a chance at the business. We will go out of our way to match all bona-fide* overseas prices. Tell us what you want, where you're getting your prices from, and the TOTAL cost of getting it here and we will do our best to get your custom.

* Some overseas stores will NOT ship overseas, so there's no point quoting their on-line prices when you can't actually buy at these prices.

There will be times when we just can't match some OS prices but we will do our utmost to get as close as possible so that your business stays in Australia.

Buy from Allans Music + Billy Hyde and you will get all the support and warranties you're entitled to, plus professional service and advice both pre and post purchase.

Call us on 1300 88 4321 or 1300 885 496 and give us a go – we’ll do our best to give you the best deal.

First LIVE audio/video recording of the Yamaha Disklavier Piano

Posted by Allans Billy Hyde , Thursday, December 2, 2010 4:26 PM

We did it!

The first ever Australian live audio/video recording of a Yamaha Disklavier took place at Bennetts Lane, Melbourne on 24th November, 2010 featuring the Daniel Gassin Trio.

The Yamaha Disklavier is a genuine acoustic piano utilising cutting edge technology which allows performances to be recorded and faithfully reproduced for future enjoyment.

The forthcoming DVD will be available for viewing in Allans Music + Billy Hyde stores which have a Yamaha Disklavier piano on the floor. This is unique as while the DVD is playing the keys on the piano will be playing exactly as Daniel Gassin played on the night (and what a gifted player Daniel is!).

See the Yamaha Disklavier online or audition one in store at Allans Music + Billy Hyde soon. Thanks to everyone who made this incredible event possible!

Mushroom Music Songbook Launch

Posted by Allans Billy Hyde , Friday, November 12, 2010 2:37 PM

On Thursday the 28th of October Allans Music + Billy Hyde Bourke Street hosted the official launch of the Mushroom Music Songbook. Media and music industry peeps were invited along to celebrate the creation of this musical masterpiece. The night kicked off with a welcome from head of Mushroom Publishing Ian James who thrilled the crowd with inspiring stories about many of the artist and people involved in the creation of this documentation of Australian music history. The evening then went on to feature intimate acoustic performances by Tim Rogers (You Am I), Adalita (Magic Dirt) & Josh Pyke, whose musical works all feature in the book.

The Mushroom Music songbook is a collection of songs from artists that spans generations. Beautifully designed with lyrics, sheet music, photographs and stories, the book features fifty truly amazing Australian compositions by songwriters from iconic Mushroom Music. The Mushroom Music Songbook is available for purchase at Allans Music + Billy Hyde: RRP $79.95. Very limited copies hand signed by Mushroom Music Founder Michael Gudinski are available. Click here to order the book online.

“This book is a collection of the great Australian songwriters that Mushroom Music Publishing represent. It was extremely hard to limit it to fifty songs. Ian James and the Mushroom Music Publishing team have over the years worked extremely hard to sign the very best songwriters both domestically and overseas. They have built and managed a brilliant roster of songwriters and an extremely impressive catalogue of songs that cover many
genres of music.

I am very proud of the results that Mushroom Music Publishing have had with the catalogue. From placing songs with artists to record, hooking up collaborations, placing songs in film, television and advertising, right through to the many song writing workshops that we host. It is one of the most successful companies within The Mushroom Group and has an incredibly strong reputation throughout the world.

This is much more than a book of song lyrics, each song has an original story written by the songwriter about their song plus an anecdote from a music peer or associate. It is a great addition to any music fan or musician’s collection. Long live Australian Music!”

TOP 5 FAVE AUSSIE DRUMMER POLL

Posted by Allans Billy Hyde , Friday, November 5, 2010 11:19 AM

Aussies ROCK!

You don't really need to look outside your own backyard to see and hear some killer tub thumpin' talent.

Here's your chance to show some drum love and list your Top 5 Fave Oz Skin Bashers PLUS tell us why your No.1 choice is in fact, No.1!

Check out our Top 5 picks and feel free to add your list! GO!

Allans Music + Billy Hyde
Top 5 Fave Aussie Drummers

1. Phil Rudd (AC/DC)
2. Paul Hester (Crowded House)
3. Jon Coghill (Powderfinger)
4. Rob Hirst (Midnight Oil)
5. Lucius Borich (COG)

No. 1 - Phil Rudd

Pristine, elemental and pure. On classic Acca Dacca tracks such as "Highway To Hell and "Back In Black" Rudd delivered exactly what the music ordered, a subsonic groove of ballsy bass and snare drum sucker punch, the perfect compliment to the rippin' blues riffage of guitarists Malcolm and Angus Young. This drumming freight train doesn't take a two and four groove lightly. Phil understands the power and subtlety behind an astutely placed snare drum rim shot, and the importance of pacing, timing, air and flow - Rudd KNOWS how to lay it down!

In 1814 Francis Scott Key wrote ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ after witnessing the British bombardment of Fort McHenry in Maryland.

WHAT’S NEW
Alt roots band The Audreys have been hard at work in the studio with Shane O’Mara recording their third album, ‘Sometimes The Stars’. The band has whittled themselves down to the core song writing duo of Taasha Coates and Tristan Goodall with a number of musicians joining them on the album and the road. The album will be in stores in October.

MISSED HITS
A year before Tom Jones recorded ‘Green Green Grass of Home’ Red West heard it on a Jerry Lee Lewis album and brought the song to Elvis Presley’s attention and was told it was too country for Elvis.

I could've used being in Little Richard's band in the '50s, a million others. I would've loved to have been in Muddy's band in the early '50s. JONATHAN MOFFETT BRISBANE CLINIC WRAP-UP

Jonathan Moffett Clinic
Princess Theatre
4 October 2010

Last night saw a crowd of 250 including special guests attend the Princess Theatre to see a drumming and performance spectacular in the hands of Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffett.

It was a relentless performance of power, technique, passion and musicality. The crowd was treated to several performances of Michael Jackson tracks along with a backdrop of slides from Jonathan’s 30 year career with Michael.

It was evident from the get go that there was an amazing atmosphere in the room. With only standing room available, the venue was perfect for such an up close an personal evening with a legend.

Towards the end of the evening Jonathan treated us all to a 10 minute solo in his home town New Orleans style. This was an incredible display of power, technique and stamina and it brought the house down.

Following this he completed the performance with 2 more classic MJ tracks.

Jonathan left the stage to a standing ovation followed by which the crowd was allowed to get on stage and have a close up look at the massive 3 kick drum kit he played.

Jonathan then stayed and signed autographs until midnight, giving each and every individual their moment for a photo and a quick chat.

Smiles everywhere, great sound and a great show….AWESOME!

Since 2000, Nimmervoll has been editor of HowlSpace, a website detailing Australian rock music history, providing artist profiles, news and video interviews.
DID YOU KNOW?
The Living End’s Chris Cheney’s trademark guitar is a Gretsch White Falcon and he uses mainly distortion and modulation effects.

WHAT'S NEW
You Am I is leaving EMI after two albums, the band’s self-titled ninth studio album will be released in October through indie label Sydney indie Other Tongues and distributed by MGM. No-one who has watched You Am I’s career will be surprised. Taking control of their recording is the next logical step, with the band already having assumed responsibility for almost everything else, shedding management, and putting production of their music in the hands of Greg Wales, who mixes the band’s live performances after being an occasional on stage member.

MILESTONE
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart had returned to Vienna from a trip to Prague in September 1791, completed the score of ‘The Magic Flute’, conducted its premiere, visited Baden in Austria - where his wife was taking the waters, and started writing the Requiem. He was evidently active and in good health. Then on November 22, two days after his last public performance, he fell ill. He may have been poisoned. He died on December 5.

MISSED HITS
Genesis turned down the chance to record Phil Collins’ solo hit ‘In The Air Tonight’ when the group was recording new material for 1980's Duke album. Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks didn’t like the track enough to include it.

IT AIN’T NECESSARILY SO
Richie Valez "La Bamba" became the biggest Spanish-language rock-and-roll hit in history, even though the young man who recorded it did not himself speak Spanish.

QUOTE UNQUOTE
In 2003 Eminem said of Britney Spears and her music, "I think it's corny as hell, but whatever. I can't knock her for doing her thing. She sucks and she can't sing."

20% THANKS
Now managed by their children - Jerry Lee Lewis (daughter Phoebe), Tony Bennett (son Danny) and Tom Jones (son Mark). Is it coincidence that all three have strong contemporary careers?

WANT ADS
In May 1962, 20-year-old Brian Jones placed an ad in England's Jazz News, seeking musicians for a new blues band he was putting together. The first person to respond to his ad was Scotsman named Ian Stewart who played boogie-woogie piano. Other musicians responded to the ad, but Jones was picky. Anyone who didn't see eye-to-eye with his vision for the band was soon ejected. He chased a singer he’d seen, Mick Jagger.

SEPTEMBER MILESTONE
Thirty years ago we were listening to ‘Uncovered’, a milestone album for John Farnham. He was no longer Johnny and the album was produced by Little River Band’s Graham Goble. Graham was so impressed with John’s voice during the making of the album he orchestrated Farnham replacing Glenn Shorrock as LRB’s singer. His next solo album would have to wait.

THIS MONTH IN AUSTRALIAN MUSIC
In 1959 Gibb family arrived in Brisbane by ship from England. Back in Manchester the family had been advised by police to emigrate for a new start. Robin was a firebug and headed for detention if the family didn’t act. They moved to Australia and the boys became The Bee Gees.

BOSS MICRO BR DIGITAL RECORDER CUSTOMER REVIEW

BOSS MICRO BR DIGITAL RECORDER
The World's Smallest Pro Studio!

I bought a BOSS MICRO BR from the Allans Music + Billy Hyde Sydney store three weeks ago. It's about the size of the iPhone, has far better usability than my old BR8, easier editing and usage of VTracks, a drum arrangement feature (different drum patterns synched to different bars in your recording) PLUS with just a couple of button presses you can master your recordings into stereo, save as an MP3 and transfer to your computer for uploading onto the web. Check out what I've so far been able to do in 3 weeks here - everything except the drumming is me - but when I get my Roland V-Drums set I'll be doing that part too!

YAMAHA PSR-S710 KEYBOARD

Posted by Allans Billy Hyde , Tuesday, August 24, 2010 9:04 AM

Yamaha PSR-S710
Arranger Workstation Keyboard

I bought the Yamaha PSR-S710 with the intention of having a portable (non-bulky), fairly lightweight keyboard with as many realistic ‘voices,’ as possible. This product fulfilled all these requirements and more. I have just finished 2 different shows (roughly 25 performances and rehearsals) on this ‘workstation arranger’ keyboard and found it extremely playable despite not having fully weighted keys. Coming from a strictly acoustic piano background I am always a little weary of playing keyboards however found that the action across this product is very intuitive, and responsive to any of the faster runs that I needed to do.

Although initially sceptical that a synth would stick out amongst acoustic instruments, the many sounds I needed to use blended into the orchestra fairly seamlessly throughout the productions. With touch responsive keys and the amazing ability to control depth (and even vibrato!) of various instruments, some of the sounds I got to use even had the other musos sitting up and taking notice. As a woodwind player I was also impressed with the range of realistic orchestral to ‘ethnic’ instruments.

I haven’t even started to explore the recording and track layering capabilities of this instrument yet (or the fact that you can save straight to USB!) but from a player/performer’s perspective, I am really happy with my purchase.

Q :: What does this merger mean to me as a customer?

A :: Whether you are an Allans Music or Billy Hyde Music customer, it’s business as usual, but around the corner are significant benefits.

We commit to a better experience for our customers - a broader range of the world’s best brands and products. More products will be available in more stores around the country - 30 locations will bring the Best Value, the Best Range and the Best Service. A :: No. Stores will be progressively co-branded and upgraded over the coming months to give our customers the best possible shopping experience.

Q :: Who do I talk to - where do I go for information?

A :: As usual you can talk to any of our managers or sales consultants about your needs. For updates from the comfort of your computer use our websites or for any questions contact us at info@allansbillyhyde.com.au.

Both www.allansmusic.com.au and www.billyhydemusic.com.au websites will operate independently while our online presence is harmonised into one site that will showcase the brand new range that will be offered. Until such time as the web sites are merged into one site, each individual site will continue to provide the same products and service as they do now. Note, that each individual site carries some products that are not available on the other, so if you can’t find it on one, it is well worth searching the other.

Q :: Can I return goods to any store?

A :: No. For the time being any customer returns must be made to the store where the item was originally purchased. Once we have merged our systems you will be able to return goods to any of our stores.
